The College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of California, Riverside stands in solidarity with the black community against the senseless killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others. We stand in solidarity against racism, intolerance, and violence in our country. We join the millions worldwide who unequivocally affirm that Black Lives Matter.
Recent events force us to reflect on what we, as scientists, faculty members, researchers, mentors, educators, and staff, must do to eradicate the systemic racism woven into the fabric of our society including any that may exist in our classrooms, laboratories, and offices, as well as our own institution.
We have a shared obligation to create a space for equitable learning to take place. Students, faculty, and staff should not feel uncomfortable about their learning and work environments in America, let alone in CNAS. Our diverse hiring practices, student recruitment, and educational environment are just beginning to positively impact our college. But the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences must do more and we must hold ourselves accountable.
To create a culture of diversity and inclusion, where all viewpoints are represented, we need to hear from you. Share your ideas, observations, questions, and comments to get the conversation started and let’s create change. Please email your thoughts to cnascommunications@ucr.edu.
