Adding Video Captions

  • When you use video and/or audio content (such as video lectures and podcasts) in your Canvas course, this content must include text-based alternatives so that all users can access the content. Not only is this a legal requirement, it also benefits all learners by providing multiple means of engagement. You have likely enabled captions or subtitles yourself when viewing media, or found it helpful to review a transcript accompanying an interesting podcast episode.

At UCR common media tools including Zoom and Yuja (where videos are uploaded/stored in Canvas/eLearn) will provide captions for you.  However, you should still review these for errors and to catch whether the media was captioned correctly.

  • Zoom

Ensure that Zoom meetings for your course, discussion section, and/or office hours are accessible by enabling automated captioning. Zoom supports captioning in multiple languages.

You can also record and share Zoom meetings to your Canvas/eLearn course site with captions and transcripts. Zoom provides guidance on enabling or disabling automated captions and using audio transcription for cloud recordings.

    Yuja

If you are using Yuja for either the recording or storing of your course videos, Yuja can provide auto-captioning–these must be edited for accuracy, but they are a good starting point from which to work. This feature is available to everyone with the Instructor role in Canvas.
